You do NOT have to renew your Massachusetts registration to donate your car. Even if the tags are expired, cancelled, or the car hasn’t moved in years, Velocity Vehicle can usually accept it as long as you have a valid title in your name. We’ll arrange a free tow anywhere in Massachusetts, the vehicle becomes our responsibility, and you still receive a tax receipt benefiting Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it works in Massachusetts: registration status isn’t what transfers ownership—the signed title does. Whether your car is sitting in a driveway in Dorchester, in a garage in Worcester, or off the road in Springfield or the Berkshires, you don’t need to pay back RMV fees or re-register it before donating. Our towing partner picks it up at no cost to you, even if it doesn’t run or is unsafe to drive. After pickup, Velocity Vehicle takes over, and you should file a simple notice of transfer with the Mass RMV to close out your liability. You get a donor receipt right away and, after sale, a tax receipt you can use when filing your federal return.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm you have your Massachusetts title
Find your vehicle title and make sure your name matches the current owner listed. In most cases, expired registration does not matter as long as you have a clear, signed title. If the title is misplaced, we can explain how to request a duplicate from the Mass RMV in Boston or online before scheduling your pickup.
2. Tell us about your unregistered vehicle
Go online or call Velocity Vehicle and share a few basics: year, make, model, location, and whether the car runs. Let us know the registration is expired. We regularly handle off-the-road vehicles parked in driveways, garages, and back lots across Greater Boston, the North Shore, South Shore, and Central and Western Massachusetts.
3. Schedule your free Massachusetts tow
Choose a pickup day and time window that works for you. Our towing partner comes to your home, workplace, or storage lot anywhere in Massachusetts—from Lowell and Framingham to Brockton, New Bedford, or Pittsfield. The car does not need to be drivable; the tow truck handles everything at no cost to you.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys
At pickup, you’ll sign the title over to Velocity Vehicle following Massachusetts requirements. The driver will guide you where to sign if needed. Once the vehicle is loaded and the paperwork is complete, responsibility shifts to us. You’ll receive an initial donation receipt on the spot or shortly after pickup.
5. Notify the Mass RMV of the transfer
For your protection, you should notify the Massachusetts RMV that the vehicle has been donated and is no longer in your name. This can typically be done online or by mail and helps end future registration or excise tax responsibility. We’ll remind you of this step so you’re fully covered going forward.
6. Receive your tax receipt for Heritage for the Blind
After Velocity Vehicle processes and sells the donated car, you’ll receive a written tax receipt. Most donors can claim at least up to $500; if the sale exceeds that, we send the IRS Form 1098-C details you’ll need. Your gift helps fund Heritage for the Blind’s services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or damaged Massachusetts title
Tip: Expired registration is usually fine, but donating without a proper title is harder. If your title is lost, heavily damaged, or in a previous owner’s name, you may need a duplicate or correction through the Massachusetts RMV first. Contact us and we’ll explain the steps so you can fix this before scheduling your free pickup.
Loans or liens still showing on the title
Tip: If a lender is still listed on your Massachusetts title, we may need proof that the loan is paid off, such as a lien release letter. Without that, the RMV may still consider the lender an owner. Track down those documents in advance or call us for guidance; it can prevent last-minute delays at pickup time.
Parking tickets or excise taxes on the plate
Tip: Old tickets or unpaid excise taxes are usually tied to your plate and registration, not the donated vehicle after transfer. While we don’t collect those, they can affect your dealings with the RMV. Returning or cancelling your plates and informing the RMV of the donation helps separate your future obligations cleanly.
Out-of-state or mismatched paperwork
Tip: If your car is garaged in Massachusetts but titled in another state, or if the name on the title doesn’t match your driver’s license, the paperwork may take an extra step. Have all your documents handy and be upfront with us. We’ll work through the details with you or flag if anything must be corrected first.
